SAD PASSING OF DR ANGUS HARKNESS MBCHB, PhD, FRCP(Ed), FRCPath, FRSC

Dr Angus Harkness, Honorary Member of the SSIEM and former Editor in Chief of the Journal of Inherited Metabolic Disease has died in Edinburgh aged 89.  Dr Harkness was appointed as the third editor of JIMD in 1979 having been a Member of General Council for the previous 3 years. His editorship spanned 18 years during which the Journal added the publications of the proceedings of annual meeting of the SSIEM and changed the format from quarto to A5. 

Dr Harkness qualified in Medicine from Edinburgh University in 1955 and obtained his PhD in 1962. He held posts at the MRC Clinical Endocrinology Research Unit Edinburgh, Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, Medical Research Council Clinical Research Centre, Northwick Park, Harrow and finally The Institute of Child Health, London from where he retired to Edinburgh in 1991. He published widely in the fields of endocrinology and purine and pyrimidine metabolism.  In addition to his contribution to the SSIEM he was an active member of the Biochemical Society and the Society for Endocrinology being Secretary-Treasurer for the Hormone Group for the latter.

Dr Harkness is survived by his wife  Eveline, two sons and a daughter.
